TABLE OF CONTENTS
Germany maintains a robust framework for workplace health and safety, governed by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) and enforced by the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV). These standards are designed to protect employees across all industries and ensure safe working conditions.
Employer Responsibilities
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (ArbSchG) and other technical regulations, employers in Germany must:
- Assess and mitigate workplace risks
- Provide safety training and information
- Supply personal protective equipment (PPE) when needed
- Establish tailored health and safety management systems
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of equipment
Additional regulations apply to high-risk sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and chemicals.
Work-Related Injury Coverage
Employees are automatically covered by statutory accident insurance, managed by the DGUV. This includes:
- Medical treatment and rehabilitation
- Compensation for income loss during recovery
- Long-term disability benefits
- Survivor benefits in case of fatal accidents
This system ensures comprehensive support for recovery and financial protection.
Health Crises Protocols
During health emergencies (e.g., pandemics), employers must follow guidance from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), BMAS, and the Federal Ministry of Health, including:
- Enhanced hygiene protocols and PPE distribution
- Remote work, staggered shifts, and physical distancing
- Health screenings and increased cleaning routines
- Contingency plans for infection cases
Employers must stay updated on evolving regulations to maintain safe operations.
