TABLE OF CONTENTS
Duration
Female employees in Burundi are entitled to 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, divided as follows:
- 6 weeks before the expected delivery date
- 6 weeks after childbirth
Upon returning to work, a female employee is entitled to 15 months of breastfeeding leave, which allows her to take 1 hour off per day for breastfeeding.
Male employees shall have 4 days of leave after the birth of their child.
Extension
- The leave may be extended to 14 weeks in total.
- If childbirth occurs after the expected date, the prenatal leave is automatically extended to cover the extra days. This does not reduce the postnatal leave entitlement
- In case of illness related to pregnancy or childbirth, an additional 4 weeks of maternity leave is granted.
Compensation
The employee shall receive a daily allowance of 50% of her monthly salary shared between her employer and Social Security.
