Termination and Severance regulations

This article outlines the procedures, notice periods, severance entitlements, and special considerations for terminating employment contracts in Burundi, based on local labor laws.


All employment terminations in Burundi must be communicated in writing, stating the reason and effective date of termination. 


Employers must follow due process, and consider notice periods and severance entitlements.

Important considerations

  • Maternity Leave Protection: Dismissal during maternity leave is prohibited under Burundian law.
  • Probationary Period: Employees on probation (up to 12 months) have limited protections, but must still receive written notice if terminated.
